Why is Apple Pay on websites asking me to update contact, shipping and billing address before making the payment? Everything looks fine in the settings

on websites that allow Apple pay before making a payment it asks be to select/confirm shipping address, billing address and contact before double clicking and confirming the purchase. This has never happened before as all the details are entered correctly in the main settings (i.e. Wallet and Apple ID) and selected as default. Has anyone ever experienced this?

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 17

OK, check these three locations please;

Each card also has an address associated with the account. Please follow this path;

iPhone > Settings > Apple ID (Your Name at top of screen) > Payment & Shipping > tap card to edit > tap Billing address > tap edit (upper right corner of screen) edit necessary changes

iPhone > Settings > Apple ID (Your Name at top of screen) > Payment & Shipping > Shipping Address (edit or delete address

iPhone > Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Transaction Defaults (scroll down) > Shipping Address > Edit (upper right corner of screen) > either Enter New Shipping Address, add new address or edit/delete addresses

The address Apple Pay uses is the address for you on the >>Me<< card in the Apple Contacts App on the Mac.

Some merchants are using what is called >>Address Verification<< of information via online/mobile transactions. The merchant may use an application or service they purchase or could be be provided by their merchant service provider (how they access credit card charges) or it could be the Payment Network Operator (Visa, Mastercard etc.).

So, as you see, it gets complicated. Merchants use Address Verification to help prevent fraud. But it can also return false information that complicates the purchase and leads to customer frustration or what banks call friction.

Are you using the merchants app or website?

This leads me to believe it’s website specific. The web sites that fail may need to update their websites and Apple Pay software. It could also be the credit card processor (Gateway) that the merchant is using. If you’re iphone is updated to the latest version of iOS, and you’ve updated all your addresses, it’s not you or your iPhone. It’s the merchant.

I too have the same issue as Robert Bellomy. The address info is and was correct before the prompt asking me to update the info. The frustrating part is that sometimes I can just play along and retype something in the address and that is all it takes to get Apple Pay to work, other times, like yesterday, I had to back out to the payment page on a web order and directly enter a credit card number. Annoying, yet Apple Pay seems to be bullet proof at a merchants terminal.

Payment method has been in my Apple wallet for YEARS and in safari - as a saved payment method. The specific comment from the merchant is that there is a problem with Apple Pay.

I intend no disrespect when I say that I hoped someone from Apple would reply this this question.

It’s offensive when the implication from another user is that we (other users) don’t know what they’re doing. We’re actually quite capable and ask the question not because we’re stupid or unable to figure it out but because it’s suddenly not working correctly.

This has happened to me twice this week on two different websites.

Thanks for the tips. I've gone into the 3 settings entries you mentioned and made some edits and re-saved them all. All were correct but just reentered some data anyway. I made sure all had the 4 digit zip extension (not all of them did, but they were otherwise correct). Perhaps that was enough to trip up some banking software(?). I'll leave like this to see if that improves things.

I too will have fingers crossed. It may be a while as I think we are all stocked up for the time being. I'll be sure to update this thread (that I kinda hijacked, no, totally hijacked, but I think it is all follows the spirit of the original question). This problem seems like such a little thing but it can be so annoying when Apple Pay keeps tripping up. Funny thing is... It's one of those things that the non-geeks laugh at... and reminding myself of that makes me laugh too.
