icloud archive folders empty and no originals on icloud drice

As I understand it, the iCloud archive folder is meant to hold a copy of your files when logged out of iCloud drive. The originals remain on the icloud server. It does not sync between them.

So, i have a folder of docs in an icloud archive folder, but most of them are not in icloud.

Furthermore, if I click on the folders in the archive, they are empty. (there is nothing in the recently deleted folder on the web page either.)

This is the second time in as many years that icloud files have disappeared on me, as in Poof! Gone.

Why? Is there any means of recovery?

hmmm. I thought that was what I said...maybe I misspoke.

My essential problem is that many files are missing from iCloud.

The iCloud archive folder on my mac shows a list of folders.

All of the folders are empty.

A very few of the folders are still on iCloud, but almost all of them have vanished.

Empty folders in the iCloud archive.

The folders and files are not on iCloud.

They weren't deleted.

I don't know what to make of this.
