Identifying refurbished iPad air 5

My iPad Air 5’s warranty shows - it is valid till December 2024. The iPad has a model number starts with M however a serial number starts with F. I am just a bit confused whether it is a refurbished iPad or brand new.

The coverage shows (checked by using serial number) it is purchased around December, 2023.

Any idea how to check whether it is refurbished or brand new?

iPad Air, iPadOS 17

Letters within serial numbers are non-specific. The iPad model number, however, may be relevant - although for refurbished devices, the model number prefix may only be changed if the device was refurbished/remanufactured by Apple.

You can find your model number here:

Settings > General > About > Model Number

Here is the full list of prefix identifiers (i.e., the first letter of the model number) - and their meaning:

  • M – Brand new device, meaning the device was purchased new
  • F – Refurbished device, meaning the device has been through refurbishing process
  • N – Replacement device, meaning the originally bought device was replaced by this model likely due to a service request
  • P – Personalized device with engraving, meaning the device was customized with an engraving on purchase
