Encrypted disk backup on MacBook Pro

Haven't backed up in awhile and there have been updates on my mac. Now I get a message that I'm backing up encrypted disk to an unencrypted disk. What does this mean? Is there something I need to do?

It means that the disk on your Mac is encrypted (see: Protect data on your Mac with FileVault - Apple Support ) but your external drive that you are backing up to is not. The data on your Mac is better protected from being accessed if it was lost or stolen for example.

If you want that same level of protection for you external disk, see information in Encrypt and protect a storage device with a password in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support
