iPhone 15 Pro Eclipse Photography

Can the Full Solar Eclipse on 4/8/2024 be photographed safely with an iPhone 15 Pro? Is it necessary to add any extra filters? What setting should be utilized within the Camera Ap for best video/pictures?

The lens has almost nothing to do with it. It is the sensor that has had improvements.

As others have said, do not do it unless you have a filter. You can go to almost any store right now and they sell the cheap cardboard glasses for viewing the eclipse. Buy a pair of those, take the filter out and tape it over the lens. It's probably too late now to order a filter on Amazon and have it arrive ontime.

Do not attempt this unless you are only taking pictures during totality. Otherwise, make sure that you have a filter over the lens.

Amazon has them as well as local camera / photo shops.

I don't recall making any settings changes on the iPhone during the last eclipse about 4 years ago. It will really help if you can mount the phone on a tripod using an adapter.

Of course it didn't damage your lens, your lens is glass and won't be damaged by direct sunlight. What you need to worry about is the CMOS sensor, that could have been damaged by focused sunlight.

Since you didn't use a filter as as everyone who answered recommended, it over exposed the the video, you won't get the results you wanted.

The camera on an iPhone is mediocre at best, it relies heavily on software to make the pictures look decent. You are never going to get the results that you would with a DSLR.
