Preview suddenly opening in tabs no matter what!

I sure hope someone can help because I'm at my wits end.

All of a sudden in the past couple of weeks my Mac (Ventura) is opening pdfs, etc in Preview in TABS. I have NEVER used tabs, do not want tabs, and in fact 90% of my job all day is comparing things that need to have numerous windows open at the same time.

I have quit & restarted Preview

I have shut down and restarted my Mac

I am running the latest install of Ventura 13.6.6

I have Preview Settings set to "Open each file in its own window"

I have Mac System Settings>Desktop & Dock>Windows & Apps set to NEVER under Prefer Tabs when opening document

What is a person to do?!

Now today it is suddenly not adding them in Tabs, but into what looks like the side bar BUT ISN'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I try and drag one out of the fake sidebar onto the desktop it duplicates it, adds a 2 to the name and puts THAT in the fake sidebar (!)

If I show Thumbnails, it only shows the one document that should actually be shown in the Thumbnails column (which to me IS the "sidebar" - and you still then see to the right of that all these same weird separate documents piled into a pretend "sidebar" - what the heck is happening!!!!!

Why on earth would this behavior suddenly start 2-3 weeks ago? I can only think it had to do with an update???

I'm attaching a screenshot of this.

Even weirder, if I bother to right-click the single icon and choose Open, it opens as an individual document. But who has time to have to right-click instead of double-clicking or having Automator do it???

I just want and need to have my Preview files open in separate windows always always always.

Thanks!

With the "Thumnails" opened it looks like this:

Thank you!!!

I just tried your Safe Launch and it seemed to work. Let's see if it last the day today (LOL!) I will report back either way.

I've never had Preview go crazy like this. Thanks for the Safe launch hint - I've never known that.

I already had the Settings as you show. So weird

There are time when a .plist file in User Account >> Library>> Preview can become corrupted or malfunction causing this type of behaviours

Having launch in Safe Mode may have just nudged things to reset to normal again

Should the issue return, given enough time to Test things out again.

Do post back and see if we can identify the specific .plist files and the possible remedial action to sort this out

Welcome and pleased things are back to Normal, for the moment 😎

In Preview >> Setting

What Opening files and close the option you expect will work for your needs

You can also Launch Preview in a SAFE Launch State

Application is 100% Closed

Hold SHIFT Key and click to launch Preview

Also been using macOS for almost 2 decades now and most of the time I experience a semi meltdown is during Income Tax Season for my household

That is finished here and all is calm again

Sorry, but I have been a Mac user for decades and never use the "sidebar" (unless it is to edit or drag thumbnails.)

I want and need my PDFs to open in Preview in one individual window each.

I have NEVER used tabs, do not want tabs, and this behavior only started a couple of weeks ago.

I could make it go away by rebooting the computer. Now that doesn't help.

I am in the middle of tax time and a vast majority of my job is having pdfs or png screenshots open at the same time.

I have another mac sitting right next to this one running the same OS with seemingly the exact same settings and it does not do this.

What is the point of Settings>Desktop & Dock>Windows & Apps>Prefer tabs when opening documents> NEVER

if it is suddenly not going to obey that?

What is the point of Preview>Settings>Images>Open each file in its own window if it is not going to do that?

Oddly I was able to make the weird sidebar thing go away by changing that to "open groups of files in the same window" - which is completely the opposite of what those words say (LOL)

Preview doesn't have a special setting for PDF that addresses this (only the "Image" tab does).

Can anyone please help me get back to having pdfs open each on their own separate windows?

Thanks!
