Trouble with Apple Pages changing my jpgs to png files

Recently while importing jpgs into Pages they are converting to png files, which is causing me lots of extra work. Anyone know WHY?

Thanks

Pages does not convert JPG to PNG in the document proper. If you select and copy that JPG image, after it is inserted into Pages, onto the clipboard then Pages will put a public.png, public.tiff, and an Apple PNG Pasteboard type on the clipboard. Same story when treating the Pages Shape tools objects in a similar manner.

Apple's Preview, when using its New From Clipboard menu item, will open that clipboard image as a PNG.

When you visit the Pages Image tab, you will see the original JPG filename beneath the File Info, and you can even drag and drop that JPG out to the filesystem as a JPG.

Tested: Pages v14.0, macOS Sonoma 14.4.1.
