I am unable to add my wife as iPhone recovery contact

I get that error message when selecting my wife as the person I want as my recovery contact. She has apple and uses iMessage. Tried turning off, rebooted, turned on - same thing.

btw - she had no issue adding me….

Account recovery contacts- “iMessage error” 🆘 Cannot Add account recovery contact. The recovery contact has an iPhone and is updated to the current iOS. Recovery contact is also part of my Family contacts. I also have a friend that’s a recovery contact but only his name is on the recovery contacts list, not the family member. When I tap on the family member to add to recovery contacts list a message pops up saying “you can only use contacts that use iMessage”. The message settings on family contact iPhone has iMessages toggled on. I added the the family contact months ago to recovery contacts but after adding to family contacts, it is no longer on the official recovery contacts list. I believe all family contacts are automatically enabled as a recovery contact, if so, wouldn’t they be listed on the account recovery list? Cannot add iMessage user and family sharing member as recovery contact on iPhone My recovery contact stopped working overnight. The recovery contact is part of my family. I try to add that person and the iPhone prompts that I can only add a person who uses iMessage. The person is using iMessage. With all updates up to date and the proper phone type on both phones. Restarted both phones. Checked settings. We are even sharing our location with each other. How do I add this person?

Contact Apple Support. They can see details of the configuration and the context, where we can’t.
