AirPods Max - Clipping and bad sound when connected to Macbook

Here's the workaround I have found to address the issue where you have AirPods Max, you connect to a Mac that has external monitors, and you hear noises, stuttering, static sounds, and similar.

Magnus here! I've had this problem since I bought the AirPods Max back in 2020. It makes the headsett 100% unusable on a Mac. I've found a workaround, unfortunately, it doesn't solve the problem, and Apple don't seem to want to address this at all, but it allows me to use the headset at work. I still get issues and sometimes clipping still, but after this it works somewhat.

Here's what I do to be able to use the AirPods Max on my Mac when it's connected to multiple monitors.

1. Turn off Bluetooth or disconnect it from your phone, so it's only connected to your Mac.
2. Disconnect the external monitors / remove the cables of the external monitors from the machine.
3. Close down the lid/screen of the machine so that it goes into sleep mode. With at least 15 seconds or longer if your Mac is a little slow.
4. Take off the headset from your head.
5. Open the lid/screen again.
6. Put the headset back on.
7. Log in to the machine.
8. Go to the sound settings, preferably use Command (⌘) + spacebar and search for "sound".
9. Then select "sound input" and choose your machine's microphone instead of your AirPods.
10. Close the sound-setting-window and then plug the cables from your external monitors, back into your Mac.
11. It should work now! You may need to do it multiple times, and if the headset connects to other devices or is disconnected from the machine for too long, you may need to do everything again, so be aware of that.

It's incredibly annoying that there isn't a fix for this, but here's at least something that helped me, so I hope it helps you too.
