Is it possible to remove the app "Numbers" from my dock?

I will never use Numbers, as I have used excel since it was created in the 80s. I have managed to change the default when opening a cvs to use excel instead of Numbers, which is great. Now it is simply using valuable real estate in my dock. I tired to remove it per Apple instructions which didn't work - dragging the icon out of dock where I see the word "remove" but no opportunity to click it before "Numbers" scurries its way back into Dock. Any suggestions?

You don't need to click the word remove. Just release the mouse button when it appears and it will be removed from the dock.

This is part of my question: "I tired to remove it per Apple instructions which didn't work - dragging the icon out of dock where I see the word "remove" but no opportunity to click it before "Numbers" scurries its way back into Dock", which is a different way of saying I already tried what you are suggesting. It didn't work the 5 times I tried it! As I said, I dragged out the icon, saw the word "remove" , and when I released my finger from trackpad, the Numbers icon instantaneously moved back into my dock.
