I want to share access to my iTunes library with my wife

I have a music library in iTunes that is stored on my iMac. I started it many years ago and it consists of music ripped from CD's (85%) and bought from iTunes (15%). It is signed in using my Apple ID.

I subscribed to iTunes Match a few years ago.

I have an iPhone 14 Pro and my wife has an iPhone 13. We both have our own unique Apple ID's.

I set up Family on my iPhone and invited my wife to share the iCloud+ subscription I have. That is working fine.

In the Music app I've set Sync library on my iPhone, this is also working fine.

But I'm really struggling to work out how to enable my wife to see our iTunes library on her iPhone. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated please.

To clarify, there is no way to directly share an iTunes library with other people. Family Sharing will not do this.

Home sharing has 2 caveats.

  1. The devices must be signed into the Apple ID used for Home Sharing on the Mac. Make sure your wife's devices are using your Apple ID in Settings ➜ Music ➜ Home Sharing. Do not sign in with your Apple ID anywhere else on her devicesd.
  2. The devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Mac doing the sharing to access the Library.

If both things are correct a "Home Sharing" option will appear in the Music App under the Library Tab when viewing the main Library Menu. You may need to tap on "Edit" at the top right, and make sure "Home Sharing" is checked.

When you tap on the Home Sharing option, the shared Library should be visible there. You can tap on it and browse content from it while the devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Hi Phil0124

I apologise for not having understood your previous explanation and thank you for your patience clarifying this.

What I've done now is perhaps what I should have thought of doing in the first place. I connected my wifes iPhone to the Mac via a cable and this gave me the option of syncing music from my library. I synced her favourite iTunes playlist which she can now see in Music on her iPhone. This has taken away the reliance on our home Wi-Fi network and has solved the problem.

Thanks again for your help.

Seems I may have spoken too soon. My wife was able to see my music library whilst she was at home but when she went out for a walk access to my library failed when she was about 100 yards from the house. This is about the range of our home Wi-Fi network, so it seems access to my library is only possible if she is within range of our home Wi-Fi network. Does this make sense?

Yes, that's what I said above as the number 2 caveat. It will only work while she is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the computer that is sharing the library.

2. The devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Mac doing the sharing to access the Library.

My iPhone has access to my iTunes library wherever I am.

Yes, because its your library and its either synced directly to your iPhone or you are using iCloud Music Library which your Apple ID has access to.

I've checked the settings on my wifes iPhone. Like my iPhone, Mobile Data and Roaming are both turned on, so I can't understand why she can't access my library.

Because its not designed to work that way.

Any further help or advice would be very much appreciated.

As I said, this is the only way this works. There is no way of sharing your library with another person directly when not on the same Wi-Fi network as the computer that is sharing it.

This is the main limitation of Home Sharing.
