Changing the file names for photos

I am trying to dump most of my pictures from my iPhone onto the MacBook. In doing so, I do not want an old image to be lost to a new image with the same file name. If I am correct, pictures on the iPhone start at IMG_0001.jpg and end with IMG_9999.jpg. How can I rename all of the picture files so this does not happen?

Thanks in advance

Windows, Windows 6

You don't need to. If you try put two files with the same name into a folder the OS will ask you if you want to continue and overwrite the existing one, stop, or keep both. If you keep both you'll end up with one file called IMG_001.jpg and another called IMG_001_1.jpeg.

Try it and see for yourself. Make two text files and give the second the same name as the first...

Yes, as Yer_Man explained Finder automatically renames duplicate names as IMG_001.jpg, IMG_001 copy.jpg, IMG_001 copy 2.jpg etc.

So the duplicates are not lost ... unless you accidentally hit "Replace" instead "Keep both"...

Besides, newer Photos.app renames images internally as 71AA5CC2-C133-4CE5-9273-BA091FD0F539.jpeg, A7C579ED-2C4A-4381-A3AA-E2ABF9D3EE3B.jpeg etc.

BTW I dislike that Photos currently uses .jpeg suffix when then exporting with otherwise original names as IMG_001.jpeg, IMG_001 (1).jpeg etc.

Exporting unmodified originals uses IMG_001.jpg, IMG_001 (1).jpg, though.
