My 2nd gen Apple Pencil has not been working since iOS 17.4.1 update.

My 2nd gen Apple Pencil has not been working since iOS 17.4.1 update on my 5th gen iPad Air.

I've been using the apple pencil this whole month - and in recent days - regularly with no issues.

It started randomly disconnecting yesterday after I updated to 17.4.1. Once I unpaired and re-paired it the Apple Pencil can not stay connected unless it is attached to the side of the iPad (which makes it a very expensive fridge magnet)

Based on this I would assume it's a battery issue, except the battery has been great up until the update.

The pencil is not damaged either, I didn't drop it, it didn't get water damage - I take good care of it.

It seems like a lot of people in the community forum are having the same issue as me after updating.

Extremely disappointed that there is no way to downgrade OS after updating... I have a deadline to meet!

Am I going to risk not having my apple accessories work after being forced into an update? It's been amazing so far, but I can't risk having tech that's basically paperweight when I have clients waiting for assets..

So far I have tried:

Unpairing and re-pairing it

Turning the bluetooth off and on again

Restarting the iPad

Force Restarting the iPad

Resetting network settings

Resetting all settings

Erasing and resetting the device as a new iPad

I tried reset, restore and DFU. Nothing worked. Spent hours with apple support to no avail.

Then I got the tip on youtube to safely heat up the pen (boil water in a pot), wrap pencil in dry cloth, put pot on top for 10 seconds. When the pencil heated up, I attached it back to the ipad and it is found again and connected.

The problem is the charging of the pen is not triggered after the updates (bug). Heating up the pen would trigger this charging. Good luck!

Given everything that you have already tried, your Apple Pencil is exhibiting symptoms of a failing battery - that will not reliably accept or hold any charge.

The tiny internal Li-ion battery is susceptible to permanent/irreversible damage through being left discharged for long periods. Even some “new” pencils can exhibit signs of failure out-of-the-box if they are “old stock”. It is essential that if you have an Apple Pencil that you charge it regularly - whether used or not - so as to protect the battery from deep-discharge. Do not allow a pencil to remain in low-charge state for any period of time - as the internal battery will fail, rendering the Pencil useless. Setting aside an unused Pencil, for extended periods, is a recipe for premature death of the Pencil battery.

It is generally recommended that a second generation Apple Pencil should be kept docked with the host iPad when not in active use - as this ensures that the tiny internal battery is kept optimally charged when not being used used. Charging only occur when the battery requires charge from the iPad, optimal charge being entirely automatic.

If the Pencil Battery has failed, the only remedy is to replace the Pencil. If the battery has failed and your pencil is within its one-year warranty, you should look to having it replaced by your retailer or at an Apple Store.

You would be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad and Pencil. If a fault is identified, you’ll be in the best possible place to explore your available options:
