Your iPad Air5 has a USB-C connector. To this you can directly connect an external storage device that has a USB-C connector - or with a suitable adapter, can connect other USB storage devices that use the larger USB Type-A connector.

To use a regular USB Thumb Drive with your iPad, you'll need an appropriate USB Adapter. For your iPad you might choose an Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter or a suitable USB-C Hub.

There are many third-party USB Hubs that have a USB-C connection for iPad plus a USB-C PD (Power Delivery) pass-through power connector to which you can connect your USB-C Power Adapter - along with the hub itself incorporating a combination of additional USB-C ports, USB 2.0/3.1 Type-A ports, Ethernet LAN, HDMI, VGA, SD and microSD card-readers.

Perhaps consider Kingston, Anker, Hyperdrive and Satechi - although there are many others from which to choose. A Google Search for USB-C Hubs compatible with iPad will find a number of articles and recommendations.

Speaking of personal experience, the Kingston Nucleum has proven itself to be particularly flexible for connection of USB storage devices - featuring twin USB3.1 Type-A, downstream USB-C and SD/microSD card slots, HDMI, plus a power pass-through USB-C port that can accept +45W from a suitable USB power source.

There are a small number of specialist Thumb Drives that have both a USB-C connector on one end - and a Lightning connector on the other end. While they may at first sight appear to be an attractive option, they are both expensive and more limited in their flexibility.

If intending to use a USB drive with your iPhone, you would be better advised to invest in an appropriate adapter for the iPhone, namely an Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter:

This adapter has both a USB Type-A connection - and a pass-through Lightning connector with which you can connect a suitable Power Adapter. An iPhone's Lightning port alone cannot provide sufficient power for many USB Storage devices.

With the suggested Adapters for both your iPad and iPhone (or USB-C Hub for iPad), you will have a wide choice of USB Storage devices that can be used with both - and can also be easily connected to the vast majority of Windows PCs and Mac computers.

Thank you. So my connector is USB-C to USB -C since they are both the same. Where my IPhone is lightning to USB-C. It has the original type end and the other end has little lines on it.

Sorry,Im not really all that knowledgeable about different types. Just wish Apple would stop changing them every time they come out with a new product.

So to use on my iPad I need one with a C port and if I use one on my phone it would be a lightning port. I don't suppose there is any that come with multiple ports. Thanks. Jane
