I think I have damaged macOS so on startup with Command+R a lock appears.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

What do you think you did to cause the damage?

If you set a Firmware password and can't remember the password, you will have to take it and proof of purchase to an Apple Store or authorized repair center to have it reset.
