iTunes complains that "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.

itunes was not working on my Microsoft Surface machine. I deleted the itunes program and reinstalled it. Now I get the statement "The file iTunes Library.itl" canno be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. And, nothing! I do not get to reload my files into iTunes. iTunes simply dies. Can someone suggest what I should do?

Windows, Windows 6

It is possible that a corrupt preference file may cause iTunes to fail at launch with one of these errors:

  • The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
  • The folder “iTunes” is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder.
  • The iTunes Library.itl cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the 'iTunes' folder in the 'Music' folder.

It may be worth trying the shift-start-iTunes method (option on a Mac) to actively select the .itl file that should contain your library. If you still get the error message try Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows and/or check for interference from anti-virus software.

BTW, are you really using Windows 6 as you tag suggests? If so, that old version may also be causing the problem and you should upgrade.

Thank you so much! It was a hidden file. There was the new one and and old one that had been relabeled. I changed the labels and everything works! And, no I am not using Windows 6. I am using windows 10 but the options provided were (a) windows 5 (b) windows 6 or (c) don't know. I guess I should have checked "don't know" but did not like that option either.

All seems to be working perfectly. You gave me the incentive to search more deeply and I found the files.

Thanks again.
