Move to iOS question

My mum is moving from her Xiaomi Note 12T to an iPhone 13 and she is trying to move everything over via the Move to iOS app. It sounds like it's completed but she can't see her photos and WhatsApp history. I'm trying to lend a hand from afar, which isn't proving particularly successful. I have a couple of initial questions that am hoping someone might be able to help with.

  • Would photos show up straight away? I know from upgrading my iPhone previously that they can sometimes take a few hours to appear.
  • Am aware the Xiaomi is probably using a different version of Android - anyone had any issues previously as a result when trying to move to iPhone?
  • My mum had her sim card in the iPhone when starting the process. Feels right to me but again, if anyone thinks she should have kept that in her android, let me know and I'll get her to retry from scratch.

Many thanks,

Pete

"If you need help with the transfer

  • Make sure that you leave both devices alone until the transfer finishes. For example, on your Android device, the Move to iOS app should stay onscreen the whole time. If you use another app or get a phone call on your Android device before the transfer finishes, your content won't be transferred.
  • On your Android device, turn off apps or settings that might affect your Wi-Fi connection, such as the Smart Network Switch. Then find Wi-Fi in Settings, touch and hold each known network, and forget the network. Then try the transfer again.
  • Restart both of your devices and try again.
  • On your Android device, turn off your mobile data connection. Then try the transfer again.

They should be visible in the Photos app once the transfer is complete.

Different to what? iPhones do not run Android at all. They run iOS. Not sure what you are trying to ascertain here.

Generally using the Move to iOS app should take care of everything.

That's fine. The sim card is not involved in the data transfer. It can be moved at any point.

Transfer Whatsapp chat History from Android to iPhone

There are two scenarios.

  • WhatsApp Chat is on the Android Device
  • WhatsApp Chat is backed up on Cloud Drives

WhatsApp Chat is on the Android Device

If all your WhatsApp chats are on the Android Device and have not taken a chat backup then... Please use --> Move from Android to iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple ... Select WhatsApp App while selecting which data you want to get moved from an Android to iOS.

WhatsApp Chat is backed up on Cloud Drives

WhatsApp Chat backed on any Cloud Drive may not get fetched. The Move process cannot extract data from Google Drive or any other Drive where the chat backups are stored using an Android device, I presume iCloud Drive is not one of them. My experience says you can't transfer the WhatsApp Backup which was done using an Android because on Android, WhatsApp, chat history is not stored on iCloud, on iOS it is.

That may be possible with third-party software. Warning!; WhatsApp data through third-party software has the risk of data being compromised. Because the data will be churned through third-party servers, which may or may not be encrypted. Be judicious while selecting the software and taking this call.

If you had enabled WhatsApp Chat backup then I am sorry you may need to contact the app developer here --> App Support or WhatsApp FAQ  Or Restoring your chat history - WhatsApp FAQ or Contact WhatsApp

Thanks Phil. Point 2 was badly worded on my part - I meant Xiaomi are using a different/customised version of android compared to say stock android on a Google Pixel. No need to respond - I've taken from your response that this shouldn't make any difference. Was just wondering if the Xiaomi may be part of the problem.

Doubtful. As long as the Move to iOS app is running correctly, the Xiaomi specific Android version should not cause any issues.
