Time machine will not backup to BRAND NEW 2TB drive

Hello,

I've purchased a brand new 2 TB external hard drive to back up my macbook air, however, when I enter Time Machine it gives the following error:

Its a BRAND NEW NEVER USED disk....how is it full?! I've done the erase/resore etc.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 14.2

Your internal drive is nearly full. Delete content you don't need, or move some of the files to a different external one and set Time Machine to back it up as well.

In any case, files you intentionally delete from the internal drive may get removed from the backup. It's not intended to be primary storage or used just to free up space.
