I was having this issue which started out of nowhere. First they were working and then they stopped. No amount of factory resetting fixed them. Nothing online helped and none of the questions that were asked here were properly answered. It’s fixed now, I don’t know exactly how I fixed it, but I will outline my steps in the replies.
AirPods Pro (2nd generation)
Hopefully this helps for anyone having this problem:
First, I disconnected and forgot my AirPods Pro from my iPhone.
Then, I factory reset my AirPods. Hold the button on the back for 15 seconds while the case is open with the AirPods inside. The light will turn amber and then white and you’ll also get audio clues.
Last, while that is happening, power cycle your phone. Up volume, down volume, hold lock button, swipe to power off. Once everything turns on and you can pair, the volume should be working again (or maybe for the first time).
I was about to give up and go to the Apple Store and potentially waste my time and a perfectly good pair of AirPods. Hopefully this saves someone else time and research, too.
