gmail copy, paste to pages fails

After switching to MacOS 14.4.1 from 13.xx, using Chrome (up to date) Gmail I can no longer copy a small spreadsheet segment or text array to Pages. All the text is replaced with question marks.

Pages was not designed to import or export web or GMail content — unlike MS Word, LibreOffice Writer, and other intentionally web aware applications. What you see in GMail may not be what is actually placed on the clipboard during the copy operation, and every application, including Pages, is designed to accept only certain data types from the clipboard. Clearly that is failing in your screen shot.

Instead of Pages, copy and paste into Apple's TextEdit, Microsoft Word, or LIbreOffice Writer (in that order and if you have access to the latter two) and see if there is any difference in the result. If the paste works in those application choices, then select, copy, and paste from them into Pages. The boxes with question marks is a character encoding issue that Pages cannot resolve directly from GMail.

Your paste into TextEdit worked because TextEdit can export HTML content, so it knows what to do with that GMail data.

If this used to work with Pages prior to Sonoma, but you are now using Pages v14, then it may be less of a Sonoma issue than changes Apple keeps making to Pages updates. In either case, nothing that can be done by the end user other than the GMail -> TextEdit -> Pages routing.

I thought I had posted this Apple Shortcut GMail to Clipboard previously. When you click that link, a dialog will appear asking if you want to install the Shortcut. Do so.

You then select text in Gmail, right-click on that text, and from the Services menu, select GMail to Clipboard. Then, all you need to do is simply Paste in Pages. No external TextEdit or other applications are necessary.

Tested: macOS Sonoma 14.4.1. Not available for macOS versions before Monterey.
