Unable to charge my AirPods Pro when the ear tips are on them

I have had a lot of issues with my airpods pro 2nd gen not charging consistently in the case - one is usually dead. I thought I was just not keeping the case charged or something, but I realized they were dying in the charging case even when the case is charged. I have taken them to apple support and had them checked out, but they said nothing is wrong. Now, the only way I can get them to charge in the case is by removing the tips, which really defeats the convenience - I don’t want to separately have to keep track of the tips and scramble to put them on when I get a call (which is mostly what I use them for). How do other people keep them charged?? Is everyone else fine with taking the tips off? I got them for free from my job but I find it hard to believe everyone is saying they’re so worth the price if everyone has this issue, but I don’t know how to get them fixed - it was a huge pain the first time with no payoff.
