Kernel panic while hibernating (sleeping) mac book pro max m2

Since a couple of weeks ago I have now and then a kernel panic after the Sonoma 14.4.1 update

I can see the error when I open the laptop after I closed it when I was not working with the computer

I have the full stack trace

Is this a hardware problem?

Very hard to tell from logs.

Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

Can more definitively tell you if there is a hardware problem. No error, doesn't mean no hardware problem. But an error should be brought in for service.

If the issue is reproduceable even after backing up your data to two separate mediums and doing an erase and install from internet recovery, and no other programs are installed, then you are more likely to consider a hardware problem.

External devices may not get enough power when you put your Mac to sleep.

Some programs may have apparent panics only when system preferences/settings have graphics acceleration turned on. This may mean a problem with the graphics chip.

First, uninstall the Anti-virus software "Virus Barrier" by following the developer's instructions. Even though it appears to be just a login item with no deep ties into the OS, it is still a problem. Anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, and third party security software are not needed on a Mac. These types of apps usually cause more problems than they solve and macOS already has great security as long as users follow safe computing habits as outlined in this excellent article written by a respected forum contributor:

Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community

You do have a lot of items installed which are operating at low levels within macOS which I do not recognize. While some of them appear to be related to Apple & XCode, I have no idea how they may affect macOS. Probably the most troublesome could be the Facebook additions that were installed through Homebrew. Homebrew is known to cause problems on macOS as it can change some critical PATH values and cause macOS to utilize third party utilities instead of the built-in utilities. I have not seen too many people using the DuckDuckGo software or the Oracle software so I don't know whether they have any known issues with macOS. Basically anything listed under Launch Agents, Launch Daemons are the most likely to cause problems with macOS since they are running at very low levels within macOS where they can cause the most problems.

You should perform the cleanup of items listed in the "Clean up" section of the EtreCheck report.

Perhaps another more knowledgable contributor will chime in regarding the software listed in the report.

You have some very unusual software installed on that computer. XcodeServer is no longer supported. Plus you have Homebrew, MySQL, and some ineffectual AV software.

Restore the computer to factory settings. Then see if the problem continues. If the problem does continue you will need to take the computer to Apple for diagnostics and repair.

More likely, you'll just need to find another solution that doesn't involve old and unsupported software.

I wouldn't say it is the 14.4.1 update that created the problem. The problem is one of the following:

  • A non-updated kernel extension for some hardware that is attached or present that was not made by Apple.
  • A poorly connected or underpowered hardware
  • A failing piece of hardware inside the computer

This is why I suggest the troubleshooting steps I do.

It is possible.

It is when the computer out of the blue gives you a multilanguage screen asking you to force restart immediately, and nothing improper has happened to peripheral connectivity, that's when I would be more concerned.

It is when the machine automatically shuts itself off when Energy Saver wasn't support to, that's when I would be more concerned.

If you get a message saying you need to clear a virus off your machine, chances are you just need to take these steps:

  1. Command-option-escape to force quit any web browser.
  2. Restart the web browser with shift key, and load the homepage, and not the last loaded page.
  3. If you have any saved passwords on your web browser go through the preferences and record them some place securely away from the computer, and clear caches and cookies, and remove extensions from the web browser.
  4. Do the same to all web browsers that could be impacted.

Do not install any cleaning, anti-virus, firewall, or VPN software (with exception for joining a school or company network). If you are browsing in a public wifi, you can use incognito browsing for pretty much the same level of security.

It looks like your issue has been resolved.

There is not a problem with Xcode if you are developing apps. Xcode Server is no longer supported and should have been removed long ago.

HomeBrew requires constant attention to make sure it and all the modules that were installed using it are kept updated. It will not happen automatically. With any OS update there is a strong chance that it will break something. If you are actively using it and know what you are doing then it is no problem, but if it is left on your system like Xcode Server, then the issues will pop up.

This is detailed straight from the HomeBrew Docs:

  • Upgrading macOS can cause errors
  • Following a macOS upgrade it may be necessary to reinstall the Xcode Command Line Tools and then brew upgrade all installed formulae
  • When using tools such as Apple’s Migration Assistant (MA), it’s possible to have two Homebrew installations unintentionally.
  • Expect to spend some time searching Homebrew’s formulae and cask list for replacements for deprecated, disabled, or removed formulae.
