3 dots top center want small icons back instead of words with icons

Tapping on the three dots will open the options your iPad gives you for viewing the current app:

Split View: Two apps are placed side by side, and you can resize the apps by dragging the border between them.
Slide Over: One app floats above a second app, and you can drag it to the left or right side of your screen.
Full Screen: Tap this to end multitasking.

those 3 dots were always “ just icons “ but after updating to newer iPad os , those 3 dots now open to “ words and icon “ i don’t really need the words to understand the icons. How do I get just the icons ?

Indeed, iPadOS 16/17 presents the Multitasking menu thus:

While the presentation of the multitasking menu does vary between current and some earlier versions of iPadOS, this is not a user-configurable feature.

Apple does invite submission of comments and feature requests via its Product Feedback portal. If you would like to see more flexibility in how the multitasking menu is presented in a future version of iPadOS, this would be the most appropriate channel through which to make a request:

I don’t understand. I had the words even when using iPadOS 15!
