Mac Book Pro M1 (2020) no longer picking up external display (TV) connected through USB-C to HDMI adapter

Yesterday I bought a USB C adapter and a new HDMI cable to connect my M1 Mac Book Pro to my TV for a movie night I am hosting tonight.

When I tried it last night it worked perfectly out of the box, however I paused the film and eventually both my Mac and TV timed out, since the time out I have been unable to connect at all.

I tested the HDMI and USB C adapter separately and both are working, I've unplugged and replugged in the USC C adapter, HDMI cable etc individually and together, put the laptop into sleep, restarted my laptop and shut down and turned back on my laptop, turned the power off the TV while connected and disconnected, I've went to the display settings and selected detected displays, downloaded the latest OS 14.4.1 etc.

Is there anything else that I can do to try resolve the issue?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.3

The Mac uses a system that reminds me of “Plug and play” to determine what display is connected, and what its capabilities are.

To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)

so try doing some of those things and see if the display comes alive.

Modern Displays with multiple ports are sometimes busy scanning the other ports, looking for an input, and miss the query from the Mac. They need to pay attention to the port you are actually using, or they will miss the query.

Make certain the TV is set to same the input as the computer is using, or no response will be sent, and the Mac will never see that the TV set is there, and stays dark.
