Minor, I realize, but connecting a Dell U3821DW to my M2 MacBook Air, without the power cord

I'm concerned about my M2 battery.

To connect to the Dell U3821DW monitor requires that I keep the power cord connected to my MacBook Air. I'd like to disconnect the power cord to the laptop, but when I do, the display turns off and the monitor can no longer detect a signal.

I'd like to connect the monitor to the laptop in clamshell mode, without the power cord being connected, so I'm not constantly running the battery to 100 percent.

The cord connection to the monitor is a HDMI (D?) with a USB-C adapter.

Thanks for any help you can provide

That monitor can provide up to 90 watts of power to a notebook computer, using USB-C Power Delivery, when you connect the monitor and the computer using a USB-C cable. (A cable that supports Power Delivery.)

Is the reason that you are using a USB-C to HDMI adapter to prevent the monitor from powering your laptop ?!?!?!?
