Since i couldn't reply to same question somewhere else i am posting the question as well as the answer here.
To remove the Google Chrome drive icon from desktop, which shows after you download google chrome app on mac, go to finder, General settings and uncheck "External disks" under "show these items on the desktop:" and the google disk icon will disappear from the desktop.
Hope this helps future users new to apple/mac.

No i was trying to explain how to remove the drive icon from the desktop but still be able to continue using chrome app. If you delete it , it will delete the app as well. There was a separate string here about how people were trying to remove it from desktop but not delete or trash the app, same as i was. Since i found out the solution, i posted it here in the hopes that it will help others. But thanks for your post.

Yes, the "drive icon" is the .dmg file. It's the file you download when you want to install a program. Once you've installed the program, you drag it to the trash.
If you turn "External Files" on again, you will likely see it still sitting there.
It sounds as if you may be talking about a .dmg file. When you turn off External Disks, you don't delete it; you just hide it.
Drag it to the trash.
