Need to get 'preferences' back on my Mac Sonoma (2021)

I am not able to connect to "preferences" in the settings menu. How do I get it back and make Safari my default browser user.

Hi,

From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings. Click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar. Scroll down on the right and choose a web browser from the “Default web browser” menu.

Just wonder what is "preferences" you mentioned. Is it the System Preferences?

"Preferences" was the name that Apple used for a long, long time. "Settings" is the name they use now. They may have shuffled some of the settings around, but when you see "Preferences", read "Settings" (or vice versa).
