My Mac Freezes/Crashes When I Launch Resource-Intensive Apps (DaVinci, Ableton Live…)

Hello everyone,

I have been using a 2019 Mac Pro (Intel), and for the past few months (this happened with both Sonoma and Ventura), my Mac freezes completely when I have multiple apps open and try to launch a resource-intensive application like DaVinci Resolve or Ableton Live. The only way to fix it is to either wait for it to restart by itself or hold down the power button to force a reboot. (there is sometimes the Kernel Panic screen, sometimes not...)

This problem occurs in about one out of every four attempts to open these heavy apps, but it happens much too frequently—perhaps once every two days.

It has also occurred while doing simple tasks, like browsing on Safari, though this is much less common.

I have already completely formatted my Mac and reinstalled everything from scratch, but it didn't solve the problem!

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue with a Mac Pro or another model?

I’m sharing my 2019 Mac Pro configuration details below.

I'm not sure what to do because I use my Mac professionally, and this issue is extremely disruptive!

Thank you for your help!

It's a start of a solution because the software that freezes my Mac is typically those using AU or VST (Ableton Live and Da Vinci). However, I have other software that also uses plugins (Studio One, Luna), but I haven't had any freezing issues with them.

Just to clarify, I wasn't referring to the freezing issue. I was just looking at the unexplained high runtime in your EtreCheck report.

Another possible explanation would be hard drives. Problematic hard drives can cause both unexplained high EtreCheck runtimes and random lock-ups. As always, look at the mechanical drives first. You have a USB drive and I can't tell if that drive is mechanical or USB. Even if the drive isn't involved in any way with what you are doing, it is still part of the file system. So when you double click on a file to launch, it may search that drive for an app to launch it. The only way to test this is to disconnect the potentially problematic drive and see if the problem continues. Just do them one at a time. And since you have to test for absence of a problem, that's difficult. You have to wait a suitably long time until you can decide if the problem isn't happening anymore.

I think I know what the cause is, but I don't have a solution.

I've seen many people report unusual and unexplained slow-downs when they have lots of audio plug-ins. You have 803. I understand why people have so many plugins. I don't know why this is causing problems. Some EtreCheck users have complained that EtreCheck has mysteriously started reporting reduced performance. But I think this is just a side effect of whatever else in the system is slowing down.

Your EtreCheck report took 23 minutes to run. You have no problem with storage or file system speeds. So why did the report take so long to run? I don't know. I do know that I've seen several people with a very similar pattern and they all had 500+ audio plugins.

Thank you for your help ! (and for the tip on changing the language of a software application without changing the system language).

It's a start of a solution because the software that freezes my Mac is typically those using AU or VST (Ableton Live and Da Vinci). However, I have other software that also uses plugins (Studio One, Luna), but I haven't had any freezing issues with them. Perhaps they don't scan the plugins immediately upon launch but rather a few seconds later, or something like that.

In my case, I have many plugins because I run a YouTube channel where I talk about music, and a portion of my content is based on testing plugins. So when companies offer me plugins, I should think about uninstalling those I don't plan to use.

I wonder if it's worth contacting Ableton to report this issue and whether they can do something about it… ?

Thank you for your quick response!

As for my hard drive usage, I think it's fine!

For the RAM, I had bought Crucial Micron (which is a reputable brand), but I'll remove all the Micron RAM to see if the issue persists with the original Apple RAM.

It would be helpful if a bug report could give us a clue when the system freezes (maybe this information can be found in the Kernel Panic report?).
