Camera and flashlight stopped working

After downloading the latest 17.4.1 update my flashlight and camera stopped working overnight. Based on posts on this site, service by Apple support and conversations with Verizon when I was forced to purchase a new phone, this problem is universal. Apple support determined that my camera problem is now a hardware (not a software issue) eve though the phone has no other physical damage, so fixes to the update will not solve this problem. Like most of us, I have multiple Apple devices that will not work with Android phones, so I was essentially forced to purchase a new Apple phone. I would have had to pay for a repair or would have received a refurbished phone if I sent it in for repair. Apple needs to take responsibility for their destroying of their phones due to their defective update. If you haven't uploaded the last 17.4.1 update, consider carefully whether you should unless and until they fix the problem that they caused.

Do they pay you to deflect negative comments about apple products? I’ve got the exact same issue as the previous guy said… prior to the update my phone was working fine. Post update, the camera and flashlight have ceased to work entirely. Every time I have bothered to reach out to Apple support services, they have tried to push me into buying a new phone and claimed that was the only solution. The thing is, every other time I was given this treatment I opted to try someone else to see what my options were. A local independent smart phone repair shop has so far fixed my phone every time for a fraction of what any apple employee has told me it would cost, and even managed to recover all of my data in a few instances where apple store techs were telling me it was hopeless to try and recover any of the data, and I just need to buy a new phone.

If it were universal (i.e., everyone with iOS 17.4.1 had this problem), not only would these forums be overwhelmed by threads about it but, the trade press and the popular press would also be up in arms. And that's not happening.

Apple support determined that my camera problem is now a hardware (not a software issue) eve though the phone has no other physical damage, so fixes to the update will not solve this problem.

Hardware failures are caused by other things than damage. Sometimes, they just go bad over time. Or, sometimes, there is damage but you can't see it. It's terrible when it happens to you but that's why Apple offers a warranty and extended warranty.

I would have had to pay for a repair or would have received a refurbished phone if I sent it in for repair.

Refurbished phones are indistinguishable from new phones. They have new screens and new batteries. They've also gone through more inspections than a phone fresh off the assembly lines.

Apple needs to take responsibility for their destroying of their phones due to their defective update.

As the update hasn't destroyed any phones, that's not going to happen.

I updated the day it was released as it has important security updates. My phone continues to function the same way it did when I bought it. Would you like to see some of the cat and flower pictures I've taken lately?
