BDAqua,

Thank you for your prompt reply. Actually one of the suggested fixes, delete outgoing mail from the outgoing box worked. However I was originally unable to do that as no outgoing mailbox had appeared! However over the course of time, over an hour, the outgoing mail with one email in it SUDDENLY appeared. I can only guess that Gmail did not process the unsent mail for a period of over an hour. I say that because I had also checked Gmail on the web prior to and no outgoing box was visible there either. So when it suddenly appeared in the Apple Mail app I deleted and all was well again. Why the delay regarding the outgoing mail box, I have no idea. Obviously some where along the process the failed to send mail was held up, most likely on the Gmail end.

Thanks again

Disconnect from the Internet, start Mail & give it time to wuit trying to send it.

If that doesn't work...

On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.

Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.

Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.

Select a volume.

Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.

The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Restart normally.
