Unknown Part On IPhone

I recently replaced my screen on my IPhone 12 Pro Max. Phone is paid for and is mine. Phone sent a message to Apple alerting them that I had an aftermarket screen replacement. Not uncommon. Similar to going to AutoZone and purchasing an aftermarket car part. AutoZone doesn’t report to Ford or Dodge when I purchase their parts so why does Apple have an algorithm built into my purchased phone that tells on me for installing a perfectly fine aftermarket part on phone that I own? Seems like I’m being treated like a child, or Apple is still assuming ownership of my phone even after I’ve purchased it. Apple needs to discontinue this or simply rent their phones and never sell them

Hello~ We are fellow forum members and not Apple. You can give Apple your opinion here…

Product Feedback - Apple

The problem is that you took your iPhone to an unauthorized third party repair shop and they replaced with what amounts to an unknown part or a non genuine part …so the message is accurate. The message is there to stay. See this information…

Apple did NOT get a message you have an unauthorized part in your iPhone. Your phone knows you have an unauthorized part and that is why you see the message on your phone. Apple is not notified, nor did Apple notify you. The phone knows. And now that you have this unauthorized part (screen) on your iPhone, things like True Tone, likely will never work again. Your phone is now ineligible for service from Apple and they won't take the phone in trade if you ever wanted to trade the phone to Apple.

This was your decision and certainly your choice. But the message you have an unauthorized part in your phone will be there forever. You'll have to live with that as again, it was your choice to not have Apple put an authentic screen on your phone.

No one is treating you like a child at all. Your phone is just doing what it was designed to do and that is alert you or anyone you might ever want to sell the phone to, that the screen is not authentic.

Kindly reach out to the Store/Individual/Agency from whom you acquired your iPhone. They would be best equipped to confirm whether the device has undergone servicing by an unauthorized service provider.

In case you recall not encountering this message at the time of purchase and it surfaced after an update, it's important to note that this message is visible specifically on iOS 15.2 and subsequent versions. It might be beneficial to inquire about any recent updates or changes made to the device's software configuration that could have triggered this notification.

Understanding the circumstances surrounding the appearance of this message could provide insights into any alterations in the device's service history or software updates that have brought about this notice.

Camera and service history

With iPhone 12 models and later using iOS 15.2 and later you can go to Settings > General > About to see the parts and service history of your iPhone and you can see if the camera has been replaced. If the repair was done using genuine Apple parts and processes, you will see "Genuine Apple Part" next to the Camera.

  • You will see an Unknown Part  message if the camera installation is incomplete or if the camera:
  • Was replaced with a nongenuine camera
  • Was already used or installed in another iPhone
  • Isn't functioning as expected

This message doesn't affect your ability to use your iPhone or access your camera.

Battery and Display and service history

With iPhone 11 models and later, excluding iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), using iOS 15.2 and later, you can go to Settings > General > About for the parts and service history of your iPhone. You can also find out if the display has been replaced. If the repair was done using genuine Apple parts and processes, "Genuine Apple Part" will appear next to Display.

  • An Unknown Part  message will appear if the display installation is incomplete or if the display:
  • Was replaced with a nongenuine display
  • Was already used or installed in another iPhone
  • Isn't functioning as expected

An additional message might appear that says "Apple has updated the device information for this iPhone." This means that Apple has updated the device information maintained for this iPhone for service needs, safety analysis, and to improve future products.

If your iPhone's parts have been previously replaced, repaired, or serviced by an unauthorized service provider, it's worth noting that Apple may decline to provide service for your device. The decision to refuse service will depend on the specific components that were affected by the unauthorized service.

It’s an IPhone 12. I don’t need Apple to service the phone. They never have. I went to a local tech store that replaces screens. Phone was purchased new when it came out from Sprint/T-Mobile and isn’t under any warranty. The message didn’t appear until the screen was changed. Apple should no longer track phones that are purchased. Again, Ford, Dodge, or any car company doesn’t care if aftermarket parts are used to repair their vehicles. Apple shouldn’t either as they no longer own that phone

Copy tracking, however, The phone did state that a message was sent to Apple relative to the part. Don’t really care if True Tone works or not, I’ve never used it. It still is a feature that it appears others have complained about. It still calls the question that other manufacturers are not doing this. Aftermarket parts are on just about everything we buy, cars as I noted earlier, and there is no note to us when we purchase those products. It’s annoying to see the note on my purchased and owned product.

Phone is unlocked, used for international travel, so no plans for getting rid of it.
