My laptop (2023 M2 Mac Air Sonoma 14.4.1 OS) auto types a vowel with an accent if I double type the letters e/o/a as if it's set to French or Vietnamese. I have to tap the letter a third time to allow me to type keep, for example, instead of kép. Very frustrating. I'm certain the language is set to US. Help?

Thanks for the response. I had changed the settings to US from Simple Telex in the language settings, but the top menu bar still showed Simple Telex. Just noticed that... This is my gf's laptop. She's Vietnamese. She clicked on that and changed the menu bar to show US. That fixed it!

Please go to system settings > keyboard > text input > edit > input sources and tell us what you have on the list there.
If you have more than one input source, use the minus button at the bottom to remove it, so that "US" is the only one that remains.

If she doesn't actually need to type Vietnamese, she might want to remove simple telex from the Input Source list in the settings. It's really easy to accidentally switch between two input sources by hitting the wrong keys.
