Printing issues on Pixma TR7820 using iMac iOS somona 14 and Pages

Bought new printer. Canon Pixma TR7820. Begin to have communication problems with the feed trays. I have finally isolated the problem to Pages. When I indicate in the Pages printer software to print from the main tray, the printer defaults and gives me error messages. When export to pdf and do the same it will print. There are other feed tray issues out there. One tech said the solution was in the way Apple sets presets in the os. Any insights? Canon or Apple software or both? I am using iMac os Somona 14. All software appears to be updated.

You are using macOS — not iOS/iPadOS which are for iPhones and iPads. Entirely different operating systems.

Apple's applications all use the same approximate (depending on app function) panel that Pages uses with your particular printer. Pages is at the mercy of the features provided by your (hopefully) current TR7820 printer driver. If those drivers or the printer firmware are out of date, simple things like tray selection, etc may not behave as expected.

As it turns out, Canon issued a firmware update for this device in Feb 2024, and new printer drivers in early Apr 2024. If you are using this as a networked device with Apple's built-in AirPrint service which excludes Canon driver need, at least update the firmware and cycle power on the TR7820. Otherwise you can get current firmware and drivers at the following TR7820 Canon site. Just select macOS Sonoma 14 and the downloads will be available.

If you choose to install the Canon driver, the printer won't recognize it until you have removed and re-added the printer via System Settings : Printers & Scanners panel. Just right-click on the TR7820 entry and choose Reset Printing System…
