..Corryj1971..

A type of adapter to use on removed drive, with other devices; such as

the HDD from failed MacBook white series, may be available. One might

get lucky to find a product like this one, locally? ..Or be able to order one.

Example:

•Newer Technology USB Universal Drive Adapter

Bare Drive Adapter compatible with 2.5”, 3.5” or 5.25” Optical, IDE, ATA, ATAPI or SATA drive

Mfr P/N: U3NV2SPATA OWC SKU: NWTU3NV2SPATA ($28+ S&H) NewerTech Drive Adapter

https://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/U3NV2SPATA/ (+see i-fix-site for instructions)

..Also shows online pages of drives and enclosures; both with and without anything in them..

[if Shipping? ⇞ OWC shows Other Addresses they ship, & outside USA. ~ Contact them.]

If there is smoke coming from the keyboard there are severe hardware issues going on. Doesn't your dad had a backup to prevent data loss?

You can try and Contact - Official Apple Support to set up hardware service for the device. but if the MacBook is indeed that old the question is if it is repairable or that there are no parts for it as the MacBook is obsolete
