Pages will not let me type in a new document, but can edit existing one

Descriptive pretty much says it. I am running latest Sonoma on 1 year old iMac.

I open a "blank document" but I cannot type in it.

I can however, open any existing document and can type in it/edit it.

iMac 24″, macOS 14.4

You probably opened the blank layout template instead of the regular blank template. If it is the blank layout template, then you won't be able to type in it until you insert a text box.
