Can I set it up so that Documents is elsewhere ?

Because Xcode and all its files take up too much space on my boot up HD, I had to install an external SSD. I am using it for all my documents and such.

So is it possible that I tell the macOS "where" to locate Documents, Downloads, etc.? This way every time I save or download something I don't have to go through the process of picking through the finder to save to the external SSD.

Thanks

Keep in mind if you put documents elsewhere, you will need to backup that elsewhere still somewhere else even.

You can't depend on one location for your files.

Microsoft Offers free 50 GB of space in OneDrive.

Google in Google Drive offers 15 GB of space.

As long as you are mindful of your file management, you can use ln as in LN in lower case to manage links to replace the existing documents folder with a symbolic link to where you want the folder mapped. Keep in mind, when you do this, if there is any failure in connectivity of the other place as you write files, the file being saved could be lost, and you might kernel panic forcing a reboot.

Changing the placement of this folder typically has to be done using Safe mode, and an administrative account.

Once changed it is difficult to change back.

You can save your documents anywhere you want. You can also configure your downloads to be any directory you want.

Pretty much the only app that never uses either Documents or Downloads is Xcode. Xcode, being an app, can, itself, be stored anywhere you want. Any you can configure Xcode to store its derived data anywhere you want.

While I can run Xcode from external drives, I was told that I must leave it on the boot up drive, else it lacks certain update feature, or something like that.

I have been told that all apps must run off of the boot up drive for the same reason.

If that is not true, please tell me. That would solved ALLLL of my problems
