Asking for volume password

Hi! I’m trying to install Monetary on my MacBook Air 2015, but I’m having trouble with the set-up process.

I’m trying to transfer my Time Machine backup but it keeps asking for a volume password (which to be fair I don’t know what is and my external hard drive also doesn’t have a password). I’ve tried entering different passwords, but no matter what I do it just gets stuck loading and won’t continue.

I’m considering just skipping the Time Machine transfer but I also don’t want to lose everything on my computer.

Does anybody know what to do? If so, please explain it to me in simple terms as I’ve no idea what to do.

Are you the original owner of the MBA? If so did you encrypt the drive with Fire Vault? It appears the boot drive has been encrypted with File Vault:

"macOS is currently installed on a FileVault volume. In order to add new users to this system, we need to collect a password from an existing user who is authorised to unlock this volume."

Therefore the backups will be encrypted and you'll have to use the encryption password to unlock TM in order to copy the user data. If you don't know and can't get the encryption password you'll need to erase the TM drive and start over from scratch.

Sorry to report but the Data on the Time Machine Backup was Encrypted by FileVault and with a Password

Without the Password - this is no option to unlock the drive and recover any of the files - period

About the Time Machine backup password on Mac

To encrypt the Time Machine backup, you must provide a backup password. No one but you should have access to your password. Choose a hint that helps you remember your password. To restore files from encrypted Time Machine backups, you must provide your backup password.

Important: If you lose or forget your password, you can’t restore or recover your data.
