There’s no “Hey, Siri!” In “Sarah.”

Siri is supposed to respond by listening for a person to say, “Hey, Siri!“. The problem is that Siri is answering whenever I say, “Sarah…“ (NO “Hey…”). This is very, very inconvenient since my daughter’s name is Sarah and I say, “Sarah…” often. I can understand Siri responding if I was to say, “Hey, Sarah…“. But I am not saying “Hey…“. So what’s the problem?!

Settings->Siri & Search->Listen for->and select Hey Siri only. This new feature was introduced sometime ago to make Siri access easier. Some like it, some don’t, and it can be turned off at the user’s convenience.

Your profile lists iPhone 5s running iOS 12, which is ancient. If that’s true you won’t have the option. It was introduced in iOS 17.

Que Sarah, Siri (Whatever Will Be, Will Be).

If you think you have problems see the videos on YouTube of the struggles Siri has with a Scottish accent. There are even some failures with the results of a request made with our Australian accent, which of course is very mild and easily understood 😉. Then there are Irish names. I'm thinking here of the problems of Siobhan, Niamh, and the like.

I found some suggestions for helping Siri understand a word (such as a name) in this link. Also at Gadget Hacks there was a piece here about how to teach Siri to recognise a word. It might help with your problem.

Now I just have to figure out how to make the app’ stop calculating that “Sarah“ is the same as “Siri“ - because they really don’t sound that much alike. I do occasionally say “Hey, Sarah…“. I pronounce the two words “Sair-ah” and “See-ree”. I don’t see how two short ”a”s sound enough like two long “e”s to trigger the app’, especially with my Midwest accent.
