The WAN (Wide Area Network) port is typically used for connecting a router to the Internet. You didn't state which model of AirPort Extreme you have, but look at the illustration Apple provides in the last model in the support document AirPort Extreme 802.11ac - Technical Specifications - Apple Support
It is identified by the circular graphic below
The WAN port has an "O" label, which is actually a circle of dots.
The LAN ports all have a <--> label next to them.
Depending on how you actually have the AirPort Extreme configured, the WAN port might actually be another LAN port.
thanks for the info. I upgraded my comcast gateway which would not connect to my Airport Extreme, with an Airport Express extender. Comcaast was no help, and Apple was offminimal help by providing old instructions as Airports are no longer made or supported by Apple. I caved and used the Comcast Gateway this morning and got internet working and all devices connected. The comcast gateway seems to be as good and maybe better than my old Airport configuration.
