Magic Mouse not opening photos with double or single click

When opening photos from the Photos app, a double or single click does not open the photo. If you single-click the Magic Mouse and hit the Return Key, the picture opens up. Historically, in 2016, this issue was a problem but was supposed to have been resolved by a software update. This is not the case. I have an MBP with the M3 chip and 36 GB of RAM running Sonoma 14.4.1. Is there a workaround or Properties setting to get the Magic Mouse to open photos with a single or double click?

Try the built in trackpad and compare your results.

if it works as expected—

To trouble shoot further you can:

—A SafeBoot Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

This test will tell you if third party interference; most extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

***if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect the charging cable before booting to Safe Mode.  This will make it act as a wired keyboard and will result in a successful Safe Boot mode.

unplug all non-essential peripherals when testing

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

all known to cause issues on the macOS

You can forget the magic mouse and then add it back in again and test:

Set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or ... - Apple Support

I have never had an issue with opening photos with a double click of the Magic Mouse.

If I select the photo with a single click and then hit the return key, it opens the photo in Edit mode.

I'm not aware of any Setting in Photos or any System Setting for the Magic Mouse that affects that.

I am currently running Sonoma 14.4.1 on an M1 iMac but have never had the issue you are experiencing on previous operating systems.
