On my Macbook Pro, I cant type anymore the @ sign and have to use an external EN keyboard. I have tried basically everything from restarting and set all keyboard shortcuts to defaults. How can I activate it again?

Swiss German should be option G
If other programs have messed this up, you will probably need to change them or make a custom keyboard.

That is really strange, no idea why it would behave that way.
Those orange boxes just tell you that those keys can be used to make characters with umlauts and tildes on them. No connection to the @.
You might try switching your layout to German Standard and see whether Option Q works to produce @.

Thanks! I have both EN and German (DE) layout, which I change routinly by fn (showing globe). Now when I tried the keyboard view on German layout (below screenshot), I see that @ is on L but cant type it because of 2 orange boxes (?), no idea. Interestingly when I do now the combination of Option + fn, then I can push L for the sign and it works. I have no idea what is going on, but getting closer!
unfortunately this doesnt work because on the keyboard @ sign is printed on L. Any other possibility?
