Apple keyboard won't write the @-symbol (Swedish keyboard)

Hi all. No combination of Alt, Shift, Cmd or Ctrl + 2 (or any other key, in fact) would generate the at (@) symbol any longer when I plug my extended USB original Apple keyboard (purchased in 2023). The key itself is not the issue, but some obscure setting perhaps?

I am running the latest OS in a M4 MacMini, but the problem occurs qhen I use this keyboard with another Mac. Please note that I have tried:

-different input sources and languages (incl. Swedish 'legacy' as Pro does not appear to exist any longer)

-keyboards from other vendors (such as Logitech) and then I can make a @

-I thoroughly reviewed the issues in this thread from 12 years ago to no avail Can't make @-symbol - Apple Community In my case the @ never appears when using any of the keyboard languages and layouts :-(

I would appreciate any help!

Mac mini, macOS 15.3

First up, what DO you get when you type shift-2? Some other symbol?

It isn't clear whether you think the problem lies with the keyboard, or with the host system.

You say the problem occurs when you use this keyboard on another Mac... which implies a problem with the keyboard itself, but that's hard because the keyboard has no concept of which character to type - it simply sends the key code to the host system, and it determines what character to input. That's why the language/keyboard setting in System Settings is key, but it sounds like you don't get the @ sign regardless of the language settings?

There are a couple of things to try.

Start off by System Settings -> Keyboard -> Input Sources -> Show Input menu in menu bar:

Then look at the menu bar for the keyboard icon and choose Show Keyboard Viewer:

This will popup a window showing your keyboard, and as you press/hold different keys, it will show what the OS thinks each key maps to. Do you see the @ sign there?

If you do see it there, then there's some additional software on your Mac that's overriding the key input. Check System Settings -> Keyboard -> Text Replacements and make sure you're not overriding the @ sign with something else.

Hi Camelot, yes that is what I suspected. That there is some installed software overriding the key input.

Because when the pop-up window showing the keyboard appears, the "@" does not show instead of 2 (whether I press alt, ctrl, etc).

But why can I make the @ when using the wireless Apple keyboard then?

Also - I have not changed the modifier keys.

I'm curious as to whether the Keyboard Viewer shows other keys as changing when you hold shift or option?

I'm leaning towards a defective keyboard, but trying to wrap my head around why only the 2/@ key would be affected. Holding the shift or option key should show replacement characters for the whole keyboard, but if it's somehow skipping the 2 that indicates some kind of prescience which keyboards aren't known for :)
