Set up iCloud email when Apple ID not iCloud address

Context: MyApple ID does not use my iCloud email (it uses a btinternet one).

Problem: I am setting up my iMac and I want to put my iCloud email into my accounts so I receive iCloud email. However, when I try to 'add account' and select 'iCloud' it simply detects my non-cloud Apple ID email (btinternet) and wants me to use that. It won't let me put in my original iCloud email - so I can't get standalone mail from this account via mail client on iMac. Please help/advise.

PS It seems I can receive iCloud mail as this comes in via the Apple ID but I cannot selected iCloud as the outgoing email address is cannot send form iCloud email.

When you say you can receive iCloud mail from the account, but not send, is this at the iCloud website or on your Mac. It seems the trouble is adding the correct iCloud email on your Mac, but check to see if it is already there.

Also on your Mac, make sure iCloud Mail is turned on at  > System Settings > [name on top] > iCloud > iCloud Mail.

If you do see your iCloud address in Mail your Mac, but cannot send mail from it, go to Mail > Settings, and choose your iCloud account. Select the "Server Settings" tab on the page that appears. In the drop down box for your Outgoing Mail Account, make sure "iCloud" is selected. If this is set as "None", it will not give you the option to send mail from that account.

Thanks so much. I had to go back to the iCloud account, change that to the iCloud email address then select iCloud in servers. Then I had to go and add a separate email for the btinernet email address (and set the server settings) so, for the purposes of email in my iMac email client, my iCloud email is @iCloud.com even though my Apple ID (and therefore main iCloud email) is btinerntet.com. Hopefully it'll all work though.

When you add the iCloud mail that it suggests, does it also show the other iCloud email address that you want to use. It is possible to use 3 alias iCloud addresses and it does appear that the one you want to use is an alias since that is what is says on iCloud.com. This support article may provide additional info on the alias emails that can be created.

With each Apple ID, you are given an iCloud email address to use with that Apple ID. You cannot add an iCloud email from a different Apple ID. If you want to use an iCloud email from a different Apple ID, then you need to be signed in with that one. You can change the email address used by your Apple ID to any other email account that is not currently an Apple ID and the iCloud email address will remain the same.

Hi. Sorry, I wasn't very clear. So if I go to iCloud.com and look at settings, sign in and settings, email and phone numbers, it shows my Apple ID is XXXX@btinternet.com (correct) and below it is XXXX@icloud.com and a question mark to the right which, if you hover over it says 'this is an alias of your Apple ID address' - this is my the original iCloud address assigned with this Apple ID and the one I want to have in my 'mail' as an email address/account I can both send mail from and receive to - except that I can receive but cannot send - and that's the problem)

So, if I compose an email address, in to 'to' field I can use the dropdown and find the XXXX@icloud.com but in the 'from' dropdown I can see various of my email addresses but I cannot select XXXX@icloud.com. Why.how can I change this so I can send form my 'alias' Apple ID email as well as my first/btinternet.com Apple ID email?
