Rapid backward text scrolling is a problem

If I reading a new text message and inadvertently touch the screen it rapidly scrolls back to the earliest message. How do I stop this or how do I get back to my most recent message? This happens to other people also.

I have tried closing the app and powering down the phone and restarting it but it still happens.

i have apple 14 pro on release iOS 17.4.1
