Epson ET-2850 - Does not work with iPad and iPhone

The printer works fine from my MacBook Pro.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPad Pro 11", both iOS 17.4.1, not communicating with epson ET-2850 printer. The printer appeared to install properly and shows up under the options, no Printer Selected menu under Printer menu, for each app installed on both iPhone and iPad. I have spent hours on the phone with Epson troubleshooting. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the printer multiple times; I've separately restarted each device. Latest/current software installed on each device. Epson Smart Panel didn't help and I have watched dozen's of YouTube videos and employed recommended fixes outlined in said videos. I am hoping something has been done to fix this issue as I had the same exact issue with a new HP printer. This clearly appears to be an apple isuue. Can I just please have a simple print button and not have to open apps which makes such a simple task soooooo complicated!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!

Your Windows PC and Android devices don't use AirPrint - unlike your Apple devices.

Does your Printer support AirPrint - and if so, has it been configured/enabled on the printer?

See:

Apple AirPrint is a driverless connection protocol. A high proportion of modern printers intended for Home, SoHo and Business environments now support AirPrint. Check your printer model against this list:

About AirPrint - Apple Support

If your printer supports AirPrint - and is set-up correctly - should you continue to experience difficulties your WiFi Router may be unexpectedly failing to pass Apple Bonjour traffic on you local network - or your WiFi Router or Network Switch may be blocking this (or other) device discovery protocol(s).

Ensure that your wired and wireless network segments are part of the same IP-subnet, are not defined as separate VLANs - or that one or other are defined as “guest” networks, or placed in a DMZ. You may find that your router has a setting that limits/restricts broadcast and network discovery traffic; by example, if your Router has an IGMP Snooping setting, try toggling this or similar settings. Your Router WiFi settings may also have privacy settings that isolate WiFi clients from each other; if present, ensure these settings are disabled.

The Apple Bonjour protocol uses mDNS (Multicast DNS) UDP port 5353.

You may find that restart of your network components will resolve the problem. You’ll need to restart your network devices in the correct order. Assuming that you WiFi Router provides DNS services for your network, restart devices in this order - allowing time for devices to fully boot/restart prior to restarting other devices:

  • WiFi Router
  • Upstream wired Network Switch(es)
  • WiFi Access Points / Network Extenders
  • Other fixed infrastructure devices - such as Printers
  • Client devices

Restarting your iPad, after restarting other devices in the correct sequence, is most simply achieved by a forced-restart of the iPad:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If you continue to have difficulties, check to see if your iPad is using the new WiFi Private Address feature. This feature is intended to provide additional privacy and security when using “public” (untrusted) WiFi networks.

Settings > WiFi > [Your WiFi Network / SSID] - tap the “i” icon - Private Address

The Private Address feature is largely unnecessary for your home WiFi network; if enabled, Private Addressing can interfere with anticipated operation of other devices, such as AirPrint/Airplay. In such circumstances, you may need to disable this feature - and can be enabled or disabled for each individual network.

Use private Wi-Fi addresses in iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and watchOS 7 - Apple Support

I would love to use AirPrint but most of the time it doesn't even come up as an option. Depends on the app I am using so it is quite hit or miss. Don't know why all these problems suddenly came up. I have been printing just fine for years and all of a sudden something changed and now what should be a simple task has now become numerous clicks into oblivion. If I reset everything I can get it to print just fine. As soon as I turn off my iPad or iPhone and go back into the same app it suddenly can't find the printer any longer. This is my 2nd printer and it is doing the exact same thing so I find it hard to believe that both printers are bad. I can print to my HP Officejet just fine but this Epson is the bane of my existence.

SOLVED:

The only way I could finally get the printer to see those devices was to create an entirely new SSID from scratch.  I essentially tore down my network to its bare minimum and when I recreated the SSID with a different name (same settings) everything came up and worked like it was supposed to. Have no clue why creating a new SSID made the difference. Will have to reach out to Cisco/Meraki and inform them as well. For now it is working as advertised on all devices. If anything changes will reach back out. Thanks to everyone for their help and support. Hope this helps someone else down the road as I was about to go out back and shoot a few printers. :)
