Apple Broke Dolby Digital 5.1 Output on Apple TV 4K

Not sure why nobody else is mentioning this, but figured I'd post to help others. One of these last few tvOS updates has completely broken Dolby Digital output (on Apple TV 4K, it seems).

I have a 2nd gen 4K model that had been fine until a recent update. I change the audio output in Settings to force Dolby Digital 5.1 for my speakers (Logitech Z906), but this suddenly no longer works! My speakers do not light the proper "Decode" light to indicate a true 5.1 signal, and the voices clearly come from left and right channels instead of just the center.

This was easy to confirm. I purchased a brand new 3rd gen Apple TV 4K (128GB) and it shipped with tvOS 17.1. I configured the audio output to force DD 5.1 and tested a movie... and everything worked perfectly. The "Decode" light indicated a 5.1 signal and voices, etc, clearly only came through the center channel. Then I upgraded to tvOS 17.4 and immediately tested the same movie, and it's broken! Nothing else changed.

Strangely enough, I have an old 1080p Apple TV running tvOS 17.4 (latest) and it still outputs Dolby Digital just fine.

I have provided this information to AppleCare as well as Apple.com/feedback. Kind of a ridiculous bug to go unpatched still. Hopefully someone will notice while we all sit here with broken audio.

The problem was solved with the latest update released for the Apple TV 4K.

I signed up on Apple's website to also receive beta updates and then the option to download a beta version on the streamer itself was opened. I downloaded an update and the problem was solved. At first, I manually enabled the Dolby Digital 5.1 option in the settings, then I set it back to auto, after I saw that it was indeed playing Dolby Digital. When I put it back to auto, it now knows how to play Dolby Digital with the appropriate content and Dolby Atmos with the appropriate content. very happy!

What are the details of your speakers and how is everything connected?

I have my Apple TV 4K connected to my LG OLED CX (HDMI 2.1) and the tv outputs all audio from any active source via HDMI ARC that goes to a switch that converts it to optical, which connects to my Logitech Z906 directly.

Sounds a bit complicated, but this all used to work prior to a tvOS update. And all other HDMI sources like PS5, etc, have no problem and still show true Dolby 5.1 on the Logitech.

On my 4k Rotel preamp, while I don’t see DTS or Dolby anymore, multi-channel content is detected, but shows up now as Multichannel PCM.

This is as intended. The output is one of Dolby Atmos MAT (when not from TrueHD sources), Multichannel PCM (Auto), Dolby Digital 5.1 (custom), Stereo (custom). The Apple TV box never supported DTS, although select apps may do their own conversion.

Hi all, I just noticed that Dolby Digital 5.1 output has been broken in one of the latest tvOS updates. I used to be able to output DD5.1 without a problem (my AVR displayed Dolby Digital on the LCD screen and I was able to hear multichannel from all the apps). Now it doesn't work anymore no matter what I do (and I've tried everything). Interestingly, when I use this video https://youtu.be/21bPE0BJdOA my AVR displays Dolby Digital and I can hear all the channels fine. But every other app I tried doesn't work anymore which is VERY annoying. Hoping Apple will be able to fix this issue (not resolved in tvOS 18.0 which I installed yesterday).

It's getting weirder. In my case, Dolby does not work in any application except the Youtube application, where Dolby sound is emitted even from materials that do not have surround sound.

Apple TV 4K 2017 connected directly to Polk MagniFi 2. Soundbar connected to the TV via HDMI-ARC.

Audio output set to AUTO (but changing this setting doesn’t change anything).

OP here. They’re probably not going to let you post this YouTube link and it’ll be removed.

Just search “Best 5.1 Surround Sound Test - By DTS” to find this video. It’s by 4K Clips and Trailers.

For what it’s worth, my Logitech Z906 speaker setup does not support DTS, so this won’t be relevant to everybody. My problem is just getting Dolby 5.1 passed through like it used to.

I spoke to Apple Rep a couple of days ago on the phone here in the Netherlands. Explained the problem (he was not aware of it). I pointed him to this topic in de Apple Discussions Group. He said he would make a note but advised to write feedback here: Feedback - Apple TV - Apple which I immediately did last week but Apple has not come back to me until now. (23rd sep)

I took the 2015's Apple TV back to the other apartment where i normally sleep, so i can test that only tomorrow, but, i checked the 2017 and 2022 versions. Neithers can plays back 5.1 audio on the tested contents, which was the trailer for "The Family Plan" and for the "Kingsman: The Secret Service".

But according to the previous checks, the 2015's version will plays back it with 5.1 audio (i will get back tomorrow).

In the past, I never tried to play anything with 5.1 audio from the Apple's own services, so I did not know if it was worked in the past or not.

Edit: Are you sure that the trailers has any 5.1 audio?
