SD transfer to an External is TERRIBLE - used to be 45 minutes, now it's a day!!

I have a 2017 macbook pro. I know it's old! lol... I used to be able to transfer my photography from the SD cards to the external in about 45 minutes and now it is taking close to a day. Anyone have any ideas? Virus? Need to clean this thing somehow? Any ideas at all would be much appreciated!!

I would not be trying to copy directly to external. Create a folder on your desktop and copy groups at a time to that folder, and then copy to the external.

If you have iCloud or OneDrive syncing on, turn it off before beginning.

If you have Time Machine backup on, turn it off before beginning.

Otherwise, run Etrecheck, and make a copy of the report here, and someone should be able to help you.
