New Apple Watch not working for Home Key

I replaced my Apple Watch SE with the same model. My home key appeared on the watch as expected but would not unlock the lock. Works fine using my iPhone and my wife’s Apple Watch SE and iPhone. My lock is the schlage encode plus.

Tried everything listed in a similar post and nothing worked but I did figure out another fix. Do this all on the watch:

go to settings
go to wallet and apple pay
tap express mode
under access keys, turn off
back out and try the lock again. You will need to double tap the button on the side (same one for debits). This should lock/unlock the door.
on the watch again, go back to access keys from step 4 and enable access keys and back out. Now you can lock/unlock without the need to double tap the pay button. Fixed
