Apple has never implemented a command-x cut feature for filesystem activity. That is a Microsoft Windows feature.

If you want to move a file then just drag and drop it. Or use command-C at the source location and then an option+command+V to move it to the new destination when you have clicked on that folder location in a Finder window.

Generally speaking, Command-X to cut and command-C to copy work great on TEXT and pictures. They do not generalize to files themselves.

So if you wanted to copy the NAME of a file, or the names of a group of files, Command-C would load the file NAME(s) onto the System ClipBoard. Command-C would not copy the file itself.

MUCH older MacOS had a 'Show Clipboard' option that could be used to inspect the contents of the System ClipBoard, including the type of data that had been placed there. Sadly, that is not generally available any more.

It shows the base filename, not the path.

If you want additional UTI information about what has been copied onto the clipboard, then the Clipboard Viewer application found in the Additional Tools for Xcode nn.n shows every UTI that a copy to the clipboard places on it.

I just copied a one-page PDF from my Desktop to the Clipboard using Finder. Here is what the Clipboard Viewer displays:

When I click on that first entry, public.file-url, the path to that file will appear on the right-hand side of Clipboard Viewer in my choice of ASCII, Hex, or Both.
