Alphasmart 3000 to Pages - Text formatting

I write with an Alphasmart 3000. Is there a way to make text bold or italic when it sends into Pages?

I've read that there are shortcuts in Word, such as *[text]* for bold, but I can't find anything like that for Pages. Pages' shortcuts seem to be based on one-off inputs like F1 or cmd-B, and the Alphasmart has no way of sending these as saved text.

Am I missing something, or do I have to manually make text italics and bold?

No. Pages understands no markdown commands accompanying plain text. Once the text is in Pages, then one can add attributes to that text with the Pages interface. There are also keyboard shortcuts available in Pages that can apply to selected text such as cmd+B, cmd+I, and cmd+U for bold, italic, and underline. These are toggles. See the Pages Help menu for other Keyboard Shortcuts commands.

Curious why you are using a 24-year-old limited device as the Alphasmart 3000 when you have access to Pages?
